My partner is not a sentimental man. Far from it, in fact. I have been making not-so-subtle hints about him having a photograph of me in a silver frame on his office desk. I have been emailing him photos of myself looking my unrealistic best but he had declined all.
Yesterday, he picked the camera up and said, “I’m going to take a photo of you that speaks to me about you.”
So we went to my beloved Itchen Valley and he snapped this. I was surprised that he loved this photo so much because he is a very vocal admirer of my assets.
When he showed my parents this photograph, my Ma had tears in her eyes. “Yes, this is my little girl. She looked exactly like that when she stood in the paddock at Clanfield waiting for me to pick her up after her riding lesson,” my Ma said. “You see my daughter as she is to me. She is so very precious to me. Thank you, dear.”
My father put his arm around me and said, “I never wanted a prince for you, just a man who loves you as much as we do. He could be homeless for all I care, so long as the love for you is there.”
Indeed, my father treats my partner like a prince, though my partner is technically homeless and wears old, holey clothes.
And I think that’s what all parents want for their children, the continuation of their love, rather than wealth or prestige which are meaningless without the love. ❤
