Life goes ON! Live NOW!

Make Giving your way of life

This was a lovely video posted on the website of Rabbi Dov Greenberg shared by my good friend Haslinda Halim. It is about the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea.

Both seas could not have been more different: one is teeming with life and the other is dead, toxic and bitter. Yet both seas are fed from the same source, the same river (River Jordan). The reason is, the Sea of Galilee receives water at the one end and gives out at the other. It gives back what it receives. However, the Dead Sea hordes everything. There is no giving. Hence its dead, toxic and bitter state.

Because human beings are part of Nature, we reflect Nature.

My Ma is the Sea of Galilee. She is a fisherman’s daughter and grew up with the belief that there is always plenty of fish in the sea. The sea never runs out and is abundant. Like her. She gives and gives and gives. I fought with her when I was a teenager to tell her to stop giving. I felt that people were taking advantage of her. But she never listened to me.

My children’s father is the same. He gives and gives and gives. Though he is not a rich man, he bought something that his youngest son wanted for his youngest son’s Christmas present. And in the same year, he gave his second son £100,000 for the deposit for a house. Both this giving had made a big dent in his pension fund and of course I screamed at him. But like my Ma, he just smiled and never paid heed to me.

I thought these two were unique, but there is a third person who also is a member of this dangerous cult. My Cardiologist. For nine years, he worked for almost no salary, from the ages of 35 to 44. Those were supposed to be the best years of someone’s career, yet he took a sabbatical to work in Third World hospitals for free. When his bank account was almost empty, he walked straight into a job that pays him £20,000 pounds A WEEK. But despite the hefty money he earns for his work, he recently took two weeks off to do charity work in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

These three people are the testament that the more you give, the more you receive. Nature is abundant, as we are. Conversely, I know a few people who count every penny, keep accounting tabs, worry about pension, have this fear of begin taken advantage of (even by family and loved ones) and never giving freely (be it money or love), who never seem to have enough, be it money or happiness.

So let’s join this dangerous cult and live/give freely.
