There was a bag of split yellow lentils at the back of my cupboard that I decided to use up. I googled ‘dhal’ and most of the photos I saw looked like diarrhoea.  No way would my fussy kid eat something that looked like that! So I played around in the kitchen and came up with this (given that she is English, I had to add natural yoghurt on top):

THE SPICES:

  1. Cumin seeds
  2. Mustard seeds
  3. Cardamom pods
  4. Cloves
  5. Red chilli powder
  6. Cinnamon
  7. Bay leaves

THE BASE

  1. Ginger
  2. Garlic
  3. Onions
  4. Tomatoes
  5. Red chilli (I used 1/2)

THE REST

  1. Lentils, soaked overnight
  2. Cooking cream
  3. 1/2 a glass of red wine
  4. Potatoes
  5. Salt and pepper, to taste.

Fry the spices in 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil until fragrant. Add the base. Bring to boil. Add the rest and simmer for at least 2 hours over very low heat. It takes better the next day 🙂
