My Ma had invested a lot of her energy into teaching us the history and geography of our home county when we were young, so that though we may travel far, we always return home here.  My partner, who is not from these parts, love our Hampshire as much as a Hampshire-bred boy these days: for him, it is home for him too, by the process of osmosis.

“For us, there are three rivers – the Hamble, the Itchen and the Test,” my Ma would say as we walked along the riverbanks in those halcyon days.  She turns 80 this year, I can hardly believe it, as my big brother and I reminisce over those days, walking along the Hamble.

For me, the River Hamble had always been that slightly more special because I learned how to sail here many years ago. I have always hated sailing but I remember the Hamble with fondness.  So we parked the car at the Jolly Sailor pub (great menu!), had lunch and walked along the paths of our childhood before finishing off at the pub again for a pint.  What a beautiful way to spend the summer day ❤
