This article is for the Places section of this website. It is about a little known place near my hometown.
“It’s like been teenagers again,” my partner laughed. Staying at my parents’ house, we have to sneak out for some privacy, and this cold, dark, wintry night found us in a hard-to-find pub called Samuel’s Rest in Wickham, Hampshire.
I didn’t really feel like going out but I could literally feel him climbing the proverbial wall sitting indoors with the old folks, watching Songs of Praise on BBC1. I was given a choice between a night run along the seawalls or a trip to the pub, and I chose the latter (of course). We got in the car and meandered deep into the Hampshire countryside.
Samuel’s Rest was warm and homely, and the proprietors were very welcoming. It serves traditional pub food (but has a gluten-free section) and the resident dog is very cute.
